Fred Monaghan’s passion has been working with Indigenous young people
in the ACT.
Over the past 15 years Fred has provided advocacy and support in the areas
of youth justice, drugs and alcohol, health, care and protection and accommodation
support.
As an aboriginal youth worker, Fred was a key contact for young people who
find themselves in the youth justice system. He has assisted not only young
people — providing support and advocacy at police interviews, court appearances
and other issues — but also their families and extended family members.
Fred has extensive experience working with Gugan Gulwan Youth Aboriginal Corporation,
specifically around drug and alcohol issues, as both a worker and coordinator.
His work involved close liaison with staff in court services, the legal profession,
care and protection, education, health, drug and alcohol services as well as
a range of community organisations. This experience has developed strong networks,
allowing him to assist young people to receive culturally appropriate help and
support.
In addition to his work in the Indigenous community of ACT, Fred has been a
member of a number of committees and boards. These include the ACT Chief Minister’s
Advisory Council, the ACT Prison Committee; the ACT Aboriginal Justice Advisory
Committee, Aboriginal Justice Centre, Circle Sentencing Reference Group; ACT
Bush Healing Farm and most recently, a member of the new ACT Indigenous Elected
Body.
